A day in the life of a crochet maker

Life can thrown us a curve ball at any point. This can be in a world-changing way or a small personal setback. Recently my life was changed by both of my children leaving home to go to university. I was helped by structuring my day as a crochet maker.

I found this to be a disorientating time, coming with a mix of sadness due to ’empty nest syndrome’, but also a relief that they had finally taken the next step moving towards adulthood.

This unsettling period raised a variety of mixed emotions and although I expected this sort of challenge, I hadn’t banked on the physical loss of habits like “picking up after them”.

This new-found freedom wasn’t all positive but I decided to bridge the gap with my favourite pastime – crochet!

“Unlearning” some of my rules for living was hard. But I managed to channel this unusual space into something that was very creative for me.

Cooking, crafting and time outdoors are the ways I’m coping with this abrupt void in my life. But more than that I am contacting them in a different way. Scheduling visits which will include cooking and shopping – this time as a more fun activity than a chore.

I am staying connected.
I explained how regular updates from them – however short – mean the world to me and keep me from worrying!

In this digital world it’s quite easy to stay connected through free messaging and video chat software, we can chat with each other, leave messages and post pictures. Not only do I feel connected to them at university, but I’ll also be keeping them in the loop about what’s going on at home including my crochet successes.

Some new patterns have been beckoning and I can’t wait to dive in.
